Plus, hamburgers are one food that I bet everyone in your family can agree on come supper time!

If you browse the spice aisle at your grocery store, you will find a plethora of seasoning mixes. The majority of them will contain ingredients like maltodextrin (sugar), dextrose (sugar), msg, nitrates, nitrites, artificial colors, and a host of other things besides the spices.

Of course, there are clean(er) seasoning blends on the market these days but you typically pay a premium for them. It’s more cost effective, and just as easy, to toss your own seasoning mix together and leave all the junk behind!

Tips For the Best Homemade Burger

Homemade hamburgers might seem laborious when you can buy pre-pressed ore pre-seasoning burger patties at the grocery store but let me just tell you how glad you will be that you took an extra ten minutes to press out your own burger patties and mix your own seasoning.

There is a subtle art to the homemade burger. I’ve included a few of my tips for making perfect burgers at home. These tips combined with my best burger seasoning is sure to yield the best homemade burgers!

  1. Don’t overwork the meat- gingerly mix your beef and spices. Minimal mixing will insure the burgers don’t get tough and chewy. It’s okay if they are not uniform in color after mixing.
  2. Use 80/20 ground beef- a good burger is fatty and juicy. The leaner your beef, the drier your burger will be. Go for the 80/20 here. Plus, it’s typically less expensive.
  3. Weigh your meat before forming the patty- this will insure even patties and even cooking.
  4. Be a baseball player- toss your weighed balls of beef back and forth in your hand like a baseball until they resembele
  5. Use your thumb- make an indentation in the middle of the burger patty with your thumb. This little trick helps the burgers retain their shape when cooking.
  6. Don’t press the patties with a spatula- they’ll stay juicy and plump if you just let them do their own thing!

How To Cook Your Best Homemade Burgers

You’ve made your best burger seasoning and formed your patties, now what? Time to cook! You can cook your clean homemade burgers on the grill, pan fry them on the stove, bake them under the broiler, or even throw them in the instant pot!

Grill– cook over direct + high heat about 5 minutes per side.

Stove– cook in a skillet over medium high heat about 7 minutes per side. Cover with a lid or splatter screen to reduce grease splatter.

Broiler– place on a baking sheet with a roasting rack and cook about 10 minutes on middle rack until cooked through. Line the baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy clean up.

Instant Pot– wrap your burger patties in foil. Add 1/2 cup of water to the pot and place the burgers on the metal trivet. Cook on high pressure for 9 minutes and quick/manually release the steam.

How To Serve Your Homemade Burgers

There really isn’t a bad way to eat a burger. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy one of my best homemade burgers:

  • Lettuce Wrapped– leafy romaine, Bibb (Boston), and iceberg work best
  • Burger Bowl style with all the fixins- just layer your burger in a bowl on top of a bed of lettuce and top with your favorites
  • Naked– but not afraid. Don’t be scared to eat your burger all by itself.
  • Chopped– chop it up and throw it in a salad.
