I get asked all the time how I stay keto when I go out to eat!

Going out to eat is something we all do (more than we should sometimes) and it helps to have a guide as to WHAT to eat when you do venture to a restaurant.

First up: Mexican food.

Ole!

Mexican is probably my family’s FAVORITE thing to eat out because it isn’t as easily replicated at home.

But, we try to limit how much we eat out because it’s so expensive and we can control the carbs at home easier!

Rule No. 1 Don’t touch the chips!

This might be a no brainer for some but I said it anyway.

Don’t even have 1 because it’ll turn into a whole basket before you know it! #beentheredonethatgotthetshirt

Instead, ask your waiter if they have house made chicharrones (pork rinds).

You can also stop by a gas station and grab a bag of pork rinds for $1 to take in to the restaurant with you! There’s no shame in the keto game!

Rule No. 2 Do not eat rice and beans!

Again, this is a basic keto no-no. Sub for salad, pico, guacamole, or queso.

Ask your waiter if you can substitute extra vegetables. Most restaurants have a vegetable medley, zucchini, or mushrooms.

Rule No. 3 Avoid fruity alcoholic drinks!

Margaritas and daiquiris are full of sugar and syrupy mixers.

Opt for a tequila with soda water and lime or a low carb beer (like Michelob Ultra or Coronoa Premier).

Rum, whiskey, and vodka are all fine to drink as well, just watch you’re mixers.

Tips

  • Any meat dish is going to be ideal. If it comes with tortillas, ask the server to not bring them so you’re not even tempted.
  • Be mindful of onions! They’re higher in carbs than peppers or other veggies and add up quickly.
  • Queso is a great add on for fat and flavor! It can make a boring dish fabulous!

entrees

Fajitas are one of your best options. Classic, delicious, and perfectly keto without tortillas.

Smother them in queso, sour cream, guacamole, or all three!

The meat and veggies will satiate any craving you walked in with!

Taco salads are a great option because they’re normally topped with cheese, sour cream, and guac. Just don’t eat the shell!

Most Mexican restaurants also have variations of the dishes pictured below.

Any meat dish that is served with veggies and/or covered in queso is a good bet. Skip the rice and beans though!

Carnitas have become one of my favorites!!

Check out the salad options too! Most salads are going to be keto friendly and they will fill you up!

Many restaurants also have items like bacon wrapped shrimpjalapeño poppers, and ceviche.

Those are all great items if you want appetizers!

Of course, every menu is slightly different but this should give you a good idea of what to look for when you’re new to keto!

Eating out and staying keto is possible! Stay focused on your goals, be mindful of the hard work you’ve put in this far, and don’t fall victim to temptation or peer pressure!
