What is Tartar Sauce?
Tartar sauce is a condiment made of mayonnaise, dill, lemon, tarragon, and capers. It is often served with fish and other seafood dishes. Most commonly, fried fish, like fish and chips, are accompanied with tartar sauce.
What Does Tartar Sauce Taste Like?
Tartar sauce is a mild and light condiment. It is flavored with dill, lemon, garlic, and tarragon. Greek yogurt is used as the base for the sauce to provide a hint of tang, but not as much as sour cream does. Though tartar sauce has dill pickles in it, the sauce is not overly “pickle-y”.
Why You Should Make Your Own Tartar Sauce
Store bought condiments are often full of unhealthy oils, like soybean, palm, or sunflower. They also contain additives and fillers to preserve the product, “project the flavor”, and make it taste good. Making homemade tartar sauce is incredibly easy and you have complete control over the ingredients that go into it!
What is in this Greek Yogurt Tartar Sauce?
Along with greek yogurt, this tartar sauce includes chopped dill pickle, lemon juice, pickle juice, garlic powder, and tarragon.
Is Greek Yogurt Keto or Low Carb?
Yes, greek yogurt is low carb and can fit into keto macros. Purchasing a plain greek yogurt that is free of preservatives, sweeteners, and fillers is always best.
Plain greek yogurt is also low calorie and low fat. It is a great way to approach a low fat low carb way of keto.
Benefits of Greek Yogurt
This greek yogurt tartar sauce may be a delicious condiment but it also boosts your immune system. Greek yogurt is a fermented food which means it is a probiotic.
Basically, it puts good bacteria back into your tummy. Having lots of healthy gut flora (bacteria) in your tummy helps keep you healthy and ward off sickness.
What is Tarragon?
Tarragon is an herb that is commonly used with fish and seafood. It light but has a very slight licorice scent, at least to me. However, it does not taste like licorice at all. You can find tarragon in any grocery store in the spice aisle. If possible, get organic and non-GMO verified dried tarragon for the cleanest possible ingredient.
Can Sour Cream be Substituted for the Greek Yogurt?
Sour cream may be substituted for the plain greek yogurt but it will change the consistency and overall taste of the sauce. Greek yogurt is thicker than sour cream which provides a rich and heartier condiment. Sour cream has a more distinct flavor than greek yogurt so it will stand out more if used.
Can Mayonnaise be Substituted for the Greek Yogurt?
It is not recommended to use all mayo for this tartar sauce recipe. Instead, you can use half mayonnaise and half greek yogurt if you prefer. To keep this healthy tartar sauce clean, use a mayo that is soybean oil free.
